I renamed my wireless router's SSID to freetalklive.com. Now when my neighbors view wireless networks in their area they'll see freetalklive.com in their list. (I have mine secured of course.) It's not my idea. I remember a caller suggesting it a few months back.
It got me wondering, could a fake SSID be broadcast (freetalklive.com) over a long range using a high-powered antennae? I know software does exist that allows for broadcasting fake SSIDs. With a longer range, more people would see it in their list and it would be difficult to prove that someone was breaking any FCC regulations. If a person sees "freetalklive.com" while using their computer, they're more likely to be curious and go to the url.
If anyone has ideas on how to do this please post.

How to put out a wi-fi signal well in excess of FCC regulations is well documented on the Internet. :)

Usually you ask what type of AP they are have first :P
I guess you use a linksys....but the default username/password combo isn't the same for all models
Also, you guys broadcast your SSID. I'm not sure why you would say your network is secured if you are. :?

Broadcasting an SSID, will slow down a true hacker by 3.7 seconds. There are at least two tools that I know of that will take ALL the work out of it. It gives you a list of possibiulities, you select the one you want, and 3-5 minutes later you're on. Even with mac filtering. (Guess it steals the whole payload.) Dumb, but cheap. And, if I was a conspiricy buff, it'd be just like NSA wants it. fjohn

I also STILL think that if it was easy and cheap and computerized, rebroadcasting FTL on low power boxes (i.e., community radio) would be a great idea. I envision, but haven't had time to do it, that the low power transmitter would be on an endless loop of the last week's shows except during FTL's "normal" (if what they do can be called "normal"!) operation. During that time, I propose "we" figure out how to push the show from the inet feed to the low power transmitter. Not pirate radio, but close. That would be sort of like putting FTL's url on your SSID. (That's what reminded me of the idea.)

For anyone else wanting to do this, that doesn't know how to log into your router:
If the previously supplied IP address doesn't actually work, then here's what to do to find the address (not ALL are 192.168.1.1):
Click Start, then Run
Enter "cmd" into the Run prompt
Once a black command prompt comes up, just type: ipconfig
The IP listed as the "default gateway" will be the IP to use in the url as the previous post mentioned.

BTW, read your manual to find out how to change your password, and do that while you're at it.

My point was that 9 times out of 10 clueless people with open AP have a linksys, and never changed the defaults.

My point was that 9 times out of 10 clueless people with open AP have a linksys, and never changed the defaults.
But the username/password and default IP are not the same for all linksys models/firmware.....but the stuff you posted is the most common.

It should be easy to script if you have a media player you can control via the command line.

it will stop 99% of computer lusers.
If you are worried about real hakers, go wired.
