In November 2007, Spanish-language newspapers reported that Fischer was hospitalized in Reykjavík (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reykjav%C3%ADk), Iceland for "serious physical problems and strong signs of paranoia." Inquiries by Mig Greengard confirmed that Fischer was hospitalized, but all other details were impossible to verify.
On January 17, 2008, Robert James Fischer died at the age of 64 in his home in Reykjavík. He died of kidney failure, caused by an unknown sickness. Einar Einarsson, the chairman of a Fischer support group in Iceland, announced Fischer's cause of death. "He was not a man who wanted to seek medical attention. He didn't believe in Western medicine," stated Einarsson in reference to Fischer's passing.
Fischer stayed at a Reykjavík hospital in October and November and at his home in December, until his death in January.

What a strange article. First it says that he lived for a number of years undetected in Japan, then later it says he spent several months "in detention" in Japan. Which is it? Or did he do both? And what does "in detention" mean-- was he in prison?
And does anybody know why he hated America so much-- did it have something to do, by chance, with becoming a nationalistic icon during the Cold War for beating a Russian at chess?

Started watching.
A little poem came to mind:

One of the reasons that Albert Einstein is such an oustanding icon is not just his intellect, but the fact that he was emotionally stable too. Unlike, as you say, the intellectual outliers seem to tend.

I know he was a socialist(though also a pacifist, so perhaps he was simply confused-he admits no expertise in your link), but I never heard of him being a front for other people's ideas-any source here? And why would that be, anyway?

Fisher felt unjustly persecuted by the US government and wanted to expatriate. Wrongly or rightly he felt like a propaganda tool of the US which he saw as being totally controlled by Jewish interest. He just wanted to be free to play where he wanted and when he wanted. He also didn't want to pay taxes on his earnings to the US government which he felt was Jewish controlled. In his mind he twisted this US Government persecution into a Jewish conspiracy to get him. He seemed to ignore the fact that all religious groups are well represented in US Government bureaucracies of greed and oppression.
Fisher was critical of Israel and US Foreign policy in the middle east. While it is possible to be critical of Israel and the Israeli lobby in the US Government about US policy without being antisemitic. Fisher didn't limit himself to legitimate criticism and delved way far into antisemitism. Many of Fisher's writings are marked by unfounded paranoia against all Jews globally.
Even with all his flaws I am glad that Iceland granted him citizenship and allowed him to expatriate. I just wished more people who wanted to expatriate could do the same. I did not agree with Fisher's reasoning for wanting to expatriate I simply admire his success in doing so. I wonder how Fisher's estate will be divided considering the US is claiming millions in back taxes and penalties. Or will Iceland retain the lion's share for granting Fisher citizenship?

Wouldn't it be great if the Free State Project was a sovereign "nation"? Dissidents anywhere could get an "instant citizenship" invitation - as long as they're willing to pull their economic weight of course (but I'm sure in some specific cases Free Staters would be willing to voluntarily pitch in to bring some people over as an act of charity). It wouldn't solve all the world's problems of course, but it would set a positive example that any other decent "nations" out there could follow. International competition and the notion of "national prestige" could pressure even the worst of governments to do the right thing...
