BBS FAIL
« on: October 20, 2011, 03:41:22 PM »

Visits to the BBS for the last three years:

Any suggestions as to how to get this place off of life support?

Lets all transition to high performance teams. We could go to one of those retreats and climb trees and things to develop trust and faithfulness.

What? Doubts?? My company isn't having any

Acknowledge the failure of unmoderated anonymity.

Confine naughty words and such to one section of the board for AMP only, to shield the unsuspecting public from it.

Enforce a code of civility and respect.

Promote in more.  And when you promote it on FTL don't say bad things about it.

Of course, that might hurt your actual show.

First decide why the BBS should be here and what purpose it should serve.

Already made them clear via other channels, but here:

Reboot BBS (Vocally, on the show) while maintaining a couple very popular choice threads.

"We're relaunching the BBS and starting it up from scratch, and retooling the TOS as the last one was a disaster and a failed experiment." EDIT "But don't worry folks, the excellent breasts thread is still alive and as fun as ever!"

Trust the mods to do their job. Trust them or don't bring them on.

Most importantly -

Creating a friendlier environment for content generators by disallowing chronic abusive behavior and letting your mods enforce it will drive your traffic. A mod should never wonder whether the site owner will suddenly turn capricious and undo their work, unless there is a rational discussion.

Consider the idea of making the whole thing AMP only. Consider the idea of people being able to amp for any amount, like a tip jar. (Thanks Brasky) A non zero sum, even if it's a penny, will do a lot to mitigate trolls.

Happy users are content generators. Happy users participate. Scared and offended users lurk and rarely chime in.

Make your users happy and they will reward you with traffic.

This.

But also, if you look at statistics and studies of how internet forums work. They get a steady explosion when they first start, then eventually die out until there remains a slowly cycling tight-knit group of core users.  Thats where we are now.

I dont really see what the problem is for the BBS. I enjoy it, comment frequently.

Ding ding ding!   Winner winner, chicken dinner.

Personal responsibility is paramount to civility and respectful discourse.

I don't mind some bullshit, but sometimes it's inappropriate.  This fuckers on in sixty markets?  And you have like, twelve regs?

Something reeks, and I think it's people being grossed out by anything-goes.  For every punk (no disrespect to punks) you've got a counterpart like ol' Mike HZ, and he may feel "okay" with people being slap-happy, but maybe it should be confined to the basement.

The General area should be more reserved, no saying rude shit to each other.  I can even see the occasional "fuck you", and the Ignore button obviously works, but some people get really carried away.  And I think that gives the place a slimy image.

I didn't give a whole hellofa lot of thought, I'm just rattling.  More leeway to move shit from the General to the HFZ and Troll Room, WITHOUT everyone bitching up a storm, might be helpful.

It's not a shocker to realize that the traffic stopped when I stopped trolling this BBS.

I should start posting more naked people.

The "Excellent Breasts" thread needs to be revived.

All of this.

It wouldn't be hard to merge (rearrange) the whole fucking board, I could do it in a few hours.

Removing the idea of anything goes in the General board would probably help.

Also, having an ACTUAL discussion of it on the radio wouldn't hurt.  Not with us, just you and Mark and Dale, and Oz if he felt like it.  However you see fit.  But, a WHOLE segment.  The pro's and con's of the concept, the whole nine yards.

You have to admit, anarchy doesn't work here.  This place NEEDS to be moderated.  Sometimes, people HAVE to be kicked the fuck out.  Its just a fact of online life that everyone seems to grasp, except for you (no offense).

Look how reasonable people are on Facebook.

That doesn't mean people have to use their real names here, they can have a handle.  But for gods sake, let us manage the fucking boards.  If people insist on being assholes, they are restricted from General, or something.

The bottom line is, we don't know the instant fix.  But we do know what doesn't work.  Advertise a cool forum and people will come.  Make the Porny board, the fag board (with no fag bashing allowed), the discussion board, etc etc.

A "share" button for Facebook would probably help.

I didn't see a problem...

Hey dude, lemme explain something (and not being a cock).

Do you realize what newspapers and TV shows, and radio shows are actually for?

They are to sell ads.  The entertainment content is the desired material to attract eyeballs to the advertisements.

Thats why the superbowl commercials cost so much, and why they show douche commercials during Oprah.

These guys not only want to spread their message, but they want to generate traffic in order to sell the ads for more money.  Thats part of showbiz.

Traffic here is quickly going down the toilet.

Part of the reason (in my opinion) is because people are so fucking obnoxious towards each other.

Back in "the day", not so long ago, there was SHITLOADS of people here.  I think Facebook is partly responsible for that, too.  Some people hang out there exclusively.  But here, they can cut loose a little, and say stuff they wouldn't want their momma to see.

However, I think people go too far with that.  There is a middle-ground that should satisfy most people.  This is not /b/ - but it's not kindergarden, either.  We should be able to satisfy the vast majority if we use some brains.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have something interesting to watch...
