Huh? I could run this forum off my $10/month web service.

How much are you raping Ian for?

This has got to be the most annoying banner in the world. I was just about to make a thread about this.

Too much of a mutt.

Goddammit, that ad is fucking annoying.

Well, with Firefox, you could just AdBlock it and in Opera there is a urfilter.ini file you could use.

I don't wanna do that nigger shit. It would block ALL the images.

You couldn't run this forum on a $10/month web hosting service. Even if the server stayed up, the host would kick you off fast for "using too many resources."

And I'm not running the server around here (anymore).

Never had that problem, I'm running two forums right now, one very active. And if they started bitching it's only $10 extra a month to buy guaranteed CPU time.

For instance it's integrated with http://amp.freetalklive.com/ and if you go over there it'll show you as logged in. The idea being that (whenever Dan finishes the coding) all your AMP perks will be automatically delivered and integrated.

Oh, I'm sure that places huge loads on the CPU.

That doesn't place loads of CPU on the server but it would introduce annoying security problems if you split it across servers, especially if one of them is not under your control.

As for the banner ad, I think the big problem with it is that it pretty much requires a minimum width of 1280 pixels.
Title: Re: BANNER AD?
Post by: FTL_Ian on June 19, 2008, 06:05:12 PM
BJ: There were already banners up there, this only takes up some empty space and it's a client paying a good chunk of cash.  If you don't run adblock yet, you should try it.

Maybe someone will buy their software or whatever.

Well, that explains that PHP error. Is there any way to change my Major Jizz/marijuana account to show the standard layout? When I log in through it, it doesn't let me see anything. If that's not possible, can you just delete that old account?

I have disabled the Default theme, so you should be back to Babylon.  Try logging in again and reloading.

That's because they're nice muted colors and they're small boxes. Not a 600-something pixel wide box of green annoyingness.

Boner Joe

Ian told me that you pulled your platinum AMP because of the banner. So, I thought I would try to explain it to you. Webex is an advertiser that has dedicated $1200 for a month trial on FTL. The banner is part of that trial. FTL is not a service. We don't just try to cover our expenses. we do FTL full time and make our living from it. I quit my 80k a year advertising job in Sarasota 2 years ago to try to grow FTL into something more. I see the potential. It has yet to reach that potential, but with the help of Sakal, Webex and a few more advertisers of that level, we will be there. The banner is not a slight against you nor is it meant to do anything but introduce our listeners/bbsers to a new product. With the money, we will pay living expenses and continue to provide you with the quality that FTL is. Without ad dollars I would be forced to work at another job and likely would not be able to convince my wife that NH is the right place for us to live.

I hope this eplains the motivation to you sufficiently. We appreciate your AMP dollars and wish you would reconsider.

Post by: FTL_Mark on June 19, 2008, 06:59:03 PM
Ian, you should try getting AdamandEve.com to advertise with FTL. It's an online sex toy store. There is another high traffic podcast that has them as a sponsor.

We had them as an advertiser, but we failed to produce the business necessary for them to continue. Keith and the Girl on the other hand has been quite successful for them.

Post by: Taors on June 19, 2008, 07:00:37 PM
I can't blame Jay for pulling his AMP money...it's not that the banner ad has a bunch of colors or is ugly, it makes the webpage stretch out and that's what's annoying about it.
Title: Re: BANNER AD?
Post by: BonerJoe on June 19, 2008, 07:16:24 PM
FTL is not a service.

The AMP program is surely a service, otherwise it wouldn't have perquisites.

Title: Re: BANNER AD?
Post by: trollfreezone on June 19, 2008, 07:23:31 PM
Maybe the ugly WebEx ad isn't the problem (at least the part that's actually advertising.)  Maybe the useless "Free Talk Live Bulletin Board System" thing (there IS a "Home" button) and that cheesy rent-a-head can go.  Then it would all fit in a reasonable width.

Come to think of it, I probably don't need to be asked to AMP either.

The colors and the layout that they use for the ad remind me of something between a medicinal topical cream package and Fedex.

A banner ad on the BBS by a somewhat reputable company kicks the crap out of that scam Outin90.  Both were about the same amount annoying, but one was also ruining the hosts' credibility and would have hurt the show in the long run, IMO.

Avoiding all the ads on the BBS is as simple as filtering out a couple of URLs:
Code: [Select]
http://www.freetalklive.com/images/*
http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=freetalklive-20&o=1&p=20&l=qs1&f=ifr
And that doesn't hinder your looking at the shrine at all.  I'll refrain from any jokes concerning particular users and the time they spend online vs. how easy it is to not see ads.

Don't see what the big deal is though- I hadn't even noticed the thing til it was pointed out. Even in newspapers, I mentally "tune out" the ads- same thing online.

And who needs a toll-free anything anymore? Doesn't everyone have a kajillion minutes or unlimited long distance on their cell phone/VoIP plans anyways?
