Tom Morello regularly wears a hat that says, quite plainly, 'commie'.  He and Zack de la Rocha have demonstrated through lyrics and advocacy that they are democratic socialists, i.e. want strong civil liberties, but want the government to run roughshod over the corporations and the wealthy.  The bassist is certainly left-leaning.  The drummer usually keeps fairly quiet about politics.

Just because people lean to the left doesnt make them communist.  That would make me a communist, and probably you too.  And as far as the hat goes, maybe it is satirical.  Maybe its a political statement like everything else they were known to do.  Heres Zack with a commie armband, Wilk with a Che shirt, and Morello with a different hat.  Morello is admittedly into marxist philosophy, but theory and application are two entirely different things.  Him being a former student of Harvard as a history major, he could probably see the distinction.

So, we have a jab at communism, a plea for unity, and an image of a Marxist revolutionary tied to Fidel Castro who was executed by Brazil, I believe.  Yeah, Cuba's a real humanitarian success story.

I really doubt you could get any one of those guys to say they would like to see the government run roughshod over anything or anyone.  Not tryin to bust your balls, just sayin'.  Everything I've ever gotten out of their message has been for the "power of the people" theme, and down with the colossus government oppression standing in the way of the simple man trying to survive.  Plus, I dont see them turning down any royalty checks, having them sent to collective farms or whatnot, with an allowance taken out to keep them in guitar picks and one meal a day.  Thats a big checkmark in the capitalism department, according to my scorecard.

But hey, whatever.  I still like their tunes.

I saw an interview with Morello in SPIN.  He's a marxist.

Their band was the first american band to play in Cuba since the overthrow as well.  They're not exactly freedom yayyy..

Everybody forgot the orginal libertarian band...Rush.

A few sample lyrics from a few songs...

No, his mind is not for rent
To any God or government.
Always hopeful, yet discontent,
He knows changes arent permanent,
But change is.

Live for yourself -- theres no one else
More worth living for
Begging hands and bleeding hearts will
Only cry out for more

Well, I know theyve always told you
Selfishness was wrong
Yet it was for me, not you, i
Came to write this song

You dont get something for nothing
You dont get freedom for free
You wont get wise
With the sleep still in your eyes
No matter what your dreams might be

What you own is your own kingdom
What you do is your own glory
What you love is your own power
What you live is your own story
In your head is the answer
Let it guide you along
Let your heart be the anchor
And the beat of your own song

The Trees, Free Will, Red Barchetta...and on & on...

When I saw them live the singer shoved a banana up his ass on stage and threw it into the audience afterwards.     :(

 You thought it was funny when he shoved the banana up his backside.  Then  shocked when he threw it in the audience,  and :(  sad when you didn't catch it for a souvenir, dildo or a going away snack?

Just trying to understand your iconography at the end of your message.

It's outrageous and funny and disgusting at the same time.

HA, HA Ted Nugent a libertarian?  So he wants to get rid of welfare and liberalize gun laws, whoopee do.  Willing to bet money he is a fervent supporter of America's biggest and greatest form of welfare and disguised unemployment, the military.

Why is Dean Koontz on the Advocates website?  He is about as libertarian as Ted Nugent.  He is consistently conservative, except without the knee-jerk homophobia and gender roles.  He shoves down his opinion down your through in all his novels, or at least all that I have read.  He is rabidly anti-drug, marijuana included, yet characters that drink alcohol, evenly irresponsibly are still placed in a positive light.  One character drinks several nips of liquor to fall asleep, Koontz plays it off as if this is something everyone goes through once in awhile.  A character washes down pain-killers with beer, to self-medicate the wounds from an attacker.  And no warning that mixing opiates with alcohol is DANGEROUS.  He also has a character in one book that is straight-edge, and broadens the definition to include moderate alcohol use.  I know people who were a part of the straight-edge movement when it began, and during it's numerous revivals, and alcohol, even moderate use is not allowed.  Strict adherents even refrain from caffeine too.  The funny thing is many of those who were there when it began, are AGAINST the drug war.

Dean Koontz is also anti-atheist, and has numerous jabs at them.  One was when the narrator was in a vacant squatter house with cultist graffiti from floor to ceiling, and the narrator said something to the effect that it is better to be irrational and actually believe in something than be an atheist.

I'd agree.

How about GWAR?

My brother just saw them live last week and said they cut Obama's head off in effigy.
