I've donated a few gallons of blood in the past, and I'm on a registry for marrow. Don't see a problem with giving something away if it doesn't cost me much of anything.

Someone told me years ago that you were actually stuck with all the expenses of donating. I don't know if that's true.

it's not.
If you show up for a specific drive where they are looking for a donor for a specific person they'll try to get a $100 donation from you to cover the cost since insurance won't cover it but it's not necessary.
