Title: And the UK becomes a little bit more like hell.
Post by: DontTreadOnMike on August 02, 2009, 11:27:39 AM
ARTICLE (http://donttreadonmike.wordpress.com/2009/08/02/and-the-u-k-becomes-a-little-bit-more-like-hell/)
Quote
In the UK at the start of every school year, parents sign a contract that says they will agree to make sure their kids do their homework, behave in school, and even go to bed on time on school-nights. It’s just a symbolic gesture. It’s not legally binding…until now.

[...]

The governments want to take thousand of the “worst families” and put them into “sin-bins”. From their description in the article, they are government housing projects outfitted for 24-hour surveilance.

My god, Orwell really hit the nail on head on the setting of 1984. Poor bastards.

I said on FTL back after the Euro elections, and I'll say it again:

The US may seem bad; it's Galt's Gulch compared to this side of the pond.

Maybe this is a stupid question, but is homeschooling legal in England?

Yes, barely. It's constantly under attack. http://www.renegadeparent.net/ is a britfag home school etc blog written by a libertarian.

Is anything still legal in England?  I don't even think George Orwell could have thought up of some of this shit.

I've got 2 kids in British public schools in the city of London - I've not been asked to sign anything.

On the other hand if you want to talk about real crap we have to put up with:
* More cameras on our streets of this one city than the whole of the USA.
* Fines of £40 for staying over 1 minute on a £1 ticket.
* Police with "Stop and Search" powers
* 45% Income tax.
* A proposed compulsory national identity card!!!!

Now look at that list and tell me that some fictional kiddie-contract is my biggest problem!!!!

At least we have free healthcare.

Yes, free healthcare was not on my list of British troubles. We could have free healthcare for every British person + immigrants for the cost of one submarine + one aircraft carrier. There would be money left over to buy a bunch of helicopters as well (which might actually be useful).

I was joking about the free healthcare.

The NHS is abysmally inefficient and prone to malpractice.

Not to mention its wrong to force people to pay for something they don't want.

If you think we should have "free" healthcare, why not have "free" government food? "free" government transportation? "free" government electricity or computers?

Oh thats right, because its communism and it fucking fails.

The NHS isn't even a good idea from a socialist perspective. A huge portion of health care costs in a human life are incurred during the last 4 weeks of life, which in rich countries with high life expectancy (like the UK), you are draining billions of pounds into a practically meaningless endeavor. Not to mention the costs of self induced illnesses like obesity, alcohol and smoking.

If people are to be stolen from to pay for medicine, then at least it should be done through some sort of voucher/welfare system.

We don't expect the government to run farms to help people who need food, they just give them the money, and food is much more important than medicine. A person can live for years and never need to visit a hospital, but they'll die in a week without food.

Just spotted on Twatter from @RenagadeParent:
"Spot the errors: midwife can't "authorise" me to refuse an induction so I "have" to see a registrar to be "allowed" to continue pregnancy."

Huh. Apparantly, if she doesn't go, the whole things gets called off. Hmm.

SIN BINS FOR WORST FAMILIES

Thursday July 23,2009
By Alison Little

THOUSANDS of the worst families in England are to be put in “sin bins” in a bid to change their bad behaviour, Ed Balls announced yesterday.

The Children’s Secretary set out £400million plans to put 20,000 problem families under 24-hour CCTV super-vision in their own homes.

They will be monitored to ensure that children attend school, go to bed on time and eat proper meals.

Private security guards will also be sent round to carry out home checks, while parents will be given help to combat drug and alcohol addiction.

Around 2,000 families have gone through these Family Intervention Projects so far.

But ministers want to target 20,000 more in the next two years, with each costing between £5,000 and £20,000 – a potential total bill of £400million...

Barely legal.

The UK government recently spent LOTS of cash to publish pamphlets teaching people how to sneeze properly. Seriously.

You do it into something (like paper) or your should/chest area.  Other options are to pull up your shirt collar around your neck and sneeze under the shirt or in the biceps/forearm area.  Otherwise, try to sneeze near the ground or away from folks.

Let's not be rude people.
