Ancient Cannabis: Uncovering a 2,700-Year-Old Stash
« on: July 15, 2010, 08:12:58 PM »

http://dsc.discovery.com/news/slideshows/marijuana-stash.html

A dig site at the Yanghai Tombs with the Gobi Desert's Huoyan Shan mountain range in background. Archaeologists uncovered a 2,700-year-old grave here that contained a stash of marijuana.

A photograph of the grave's whole cannabis sample as it is examined in a lab. The scientists are unsure if the marijuana was grown for more spiritual or medical purposes, but it's evident that the blue-eyed man was buried with a lot of it.

Damn, that dude had a couple kilo sized stash bowl! And  nice leather travel bag too. No pipe tho, but I guess he had the poundage to just chaw it like tobacco.

World's oldest marijuana stash totally busted

Two pounds of still-green weed found in a 2,700-year-old Gobi Desert grave

Nearly two pounds of still-green plant material found in a 2,700-year-old grave in the Gobi Desert has just been identified as the world's oldest marijuana stash, according to a paper in the latest issue of the Journal of Experimental Botany.

A barrage of tests proves the marijuana possessed potent psychoactive properties and casts doubt on the theory that the ancients only grew the plant for hemp in order to make clothing, rope and other objects.

They apparently were getting high too.

Lead author Ethan Russo told Discovery News that the marijuana "is quite similar" to what's grown today.

"We know from both the chemical analysis and genetics that it could produce THC (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid synthase, the main psychoactive chemical in the plant)," he explained, adding that no one could feel its effects today, due to decomposition over the millennia.

Russo served as a visiting professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Botany while conducting the study. He and his international team analyzed the cannabis, which was excavated at the Yanghai Tombs near Turpan, China. It was found lightly pounded in a wooden bowl in a leather basket near the head of a blue-eyed Caucasian man who died when he was about 45.

"This individual was buried with an unusual number of high value, rare items," Russo said, mentioning that the objects included a make-up bag, bridles, pots, archery equipment and a kongou harp. The researchers believe the individual was a shaman from the Gushi people, who spoke a now-extinct language called Tocharian that was similar to Celtic.

Isn't cannabis only native in the Americas? I know they found some in old mummy tombs in Africa. Or maybe that was tobacco. Maybe the ancient trade network was a lot more sophisticated than what is commonly believed.

Different varieties of "Hemp" grow around the world:

http://antiquecannabisbook.com/chap1/History.htm

http://www.concept420.com/marijuana_cannabis_history_timeline.htm

"God said, 'Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed which is upon the face of all the earth. To you it will be for meat.' And God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." (Genesis 1:29-31)

Although "Cannabis" or medicinal Hemp is not mentioned specifically in the Bible, Hemp used for food (the seeds were a staple in eastern Africa) , rope & fishing nets, and clothing is. The medicinal use of Hemp is argued by some to actually have been originally mentioned but lost in translation.

And going slightly off topic but also related to the history of Cannabis : Most people have absolutely no idea that both the Declaration of Independence and The Constitution of the United States of America are both written on Hemp.

IIRC, they are written on parchment.

You are incorrect. They were BOTH written on Hemp paper. The two documents that are displayed are COPIES that were transcribed on Parchment.
