Amusing Ourselves Into Slavery

This rare gem from what's otherwise a very socialist Web-site really captures the reality of how "the powers that be" are able to control us, and I'm afraid that pot will soon be added to the ever-growing list of fatal distractions.

That of course doesn't mean it should be kept illegal, but I don't like how much attention it is getting within the liberty movement, specially when compared to things like gulching and tax resistance.  I see that as a strong sign of weakness from our movement - I think a lot of people moving in the same direction as me will become complacent when their main goal is reached.

I'm of course guilty of many lapses of self-discipline as well -- none of us are perfect -- but vigilance is essential for any movement that is concerned with liberty.  Fighting external oppressors is important, but, as self-contradictory as that may initially sound, many causes of one's oppression can come from within.

Nice juxtaposition. They're not mutually exclusive, of course.

I don't think appetites for trivia subsume any passion for justice or freedom, i think theres simply a corellation between the two.

People with dull affect who don't care about anything other than their immediate sphere of influence are going to get sucked into modern trivia because its the only thing they are interested in.

I don't think ordinarily brilliant and curious people are somehow being turned into drones just because so much trivia is on offer.

Likewise, you can have people who are very passionate about intellectual fields, with virtually no appetite for trivia (don't own a TV types), who aren't politically engaged, and if they are, simply wallow in 2 party bullshit.

The most telling statistic about peoples political affect is simply that most people vote the same way as their parents. That if anything is symbolic of why we are fucked.

I say both are true depending on the person being subjugated.  Those they can't amused into passivity will be forced.
