Alex Libman's Movie Torrent of The Week
« on: June 03, 2007, 12:21:07 AM »

Not sure about the "of the week" part, but here's a thread where I'll occasionally post about some video torrents I am seeding, especially out-of-the-mainstream movies I wholeheartedly recommend which people otherwise might miss.  Please let me know if you have any trouble downloading.

To start things off -- Shaka Zulu, a 10-part miniseries (WP) from the 80s by the South African Broadcasting Corporation.  One of my favorite Der Wille zur Macht stories, set in overwhelmingly exotic 19th century Africa.  It kicks ass on every level!

OK, this week - two very disturbing and powerful films, if you can make it through them.  Both were made in the Soviet Union, both take place in World War II, and both deal with a subject completely foreign to the American experience: the effect of war on children.  They are Ivan's Childhood (WP) and Come and See (WP).  I'm not even going to make an effort to describe them myself, just recommend them - see the Wikipedia articles and links therein for more info.

A few technical notes:  All movies I post here work with the VLC Player, including English subtitles.  You may need WinRAR (or equivalent) to extract the subtitle files, which must be placed in the same folder as the video files, and then select the appropriate language (Video menu -> Subtitles Track -> English in VLC).  As with all rare movies, seeding them as long as possible after you download could help somebody out big time.

This week, two West German made films set almost 400 years apart, both taking place in Peru, both starring the legendary Klaus Kinski, both directed by Werner Herzog, and both dealing with subjects of colonialism and the humbling of man before nature.  They are Aguirre, the Wrath of God  [WP] and  Fitzcarraldo  [WP].

Technical note: you should be able to switch audio track between English / German / Spanish.  Please let me know if you have any problems downloading or watching.

This week -- a bit more modern and more mainstream than my previous picks -- two early (1990s) dystopian / tech-noir films by French directors Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro, which unfortunately got less attention in U.S. than their recent romantic flicks: Delicatessen [WP] and The City of Lost Children [WP].

(I wanted to be posting these "of the week" things on Fridays, but this time I was delayed because the only copy of the latter film I could initially find was a dubbed AVI, and few cultural travesties piss me off more than dubbing a French film!)

I skipped the last weekend, so instead of a film here's a documentary I've already mentioned on the libertarian (audio)books thread:

Here's an American movie that most people here probably have seen, and the few who haven't will be very glad to finally see it - the 1949 filming of The Fountainhead [WP], starring Gary Cooper and Patricia Neal, directed by King Vidor, with Ayn Rand herself penning the screenplay.  I also found a version with embedded Spanish subtitles, El Manantial, in case someone here will want to watch it with su abuela Cubano;)

I couldn't find it on BitTorrent for ages, and finally found it on eDonkey.  I'm not sure if those links will work even if you have an eDonkey client installed, because the forum insists on adding the http protocol prefix.

Here, just in case, is an eD2K link to copy'n'paste with complete hashset:

Alex, thank you for posting these film ideas. I've had a lot of fun learning how to download these videos and then make DVDs out of them. So far, I've only been able to finish downloading the first two, Ivanovo Detstvo, and Come and See. I've just today learned that the torrent that I was using was significantly throttling me back, and things are going much faster today. I hope to catch up with you in the coming weeks.

Returning after a hiatus, here are two movies made in 1970s that satire the British aristocracy at its worst, and yet never fail to present the complexity and material beauty that's associated with it.  Legendary actor Peter O'Toole stars in The Ruling Class  [WP].  And what IMHO is legendary director Stanley Kubrick's most underrated work (and my personal favorite, especially the second half), Barry Lyndon  [WP], a film that also looks at other layers of society, as well as at nationalism, war, and personal ambition.

I haven't been on broadband or didn't download many movies for a while, I can probably resume this thread now.  Let's see.  This week...

A flawed but funny 1939 anti-Communist romantic comedy, Ninotchka [WP].

Canadian Bacon [WP] - before Michael Moore became a vomit-provoking socialist pig, he made this cinematic attempt to capture blue-collar Americana at its best - in a bogus war against Canada.  Enjoy!

悲情城市 / A City of Sadness [WP] - a brutally honest Taiwanese drama about the "lesser evil" many of us western anti-communists found in our interest to support.  (If you download, please help seed.)
