A police helicopter in the backyard
« on: September 30, 2009, 05:38:56 PM »

First, a bit of background - I live on a 6 acre property and theres an old greenhouse on it. So, this was yesterday morning for me. Having brekfast and I hear this noise and think "jeez that helicopter is flying low", and sure enough, down the backyard is a police helicopter hovering just above the greenhouse. A greenhouse that hasn't been used in the 14 years since we moved in.

How low would a helicopter have to be flying before it would be considered a trespass?

the second it interrupts your breakfast by making you get up from the table to look out the window.

probably saw the old green house and thought, "gee...what a cliche spot for someone to grow a marijuana crop...let's roll in and survey this situation"

That sucks. Call and complain, that is really all you can do... and not risk getting shot.

Guns are mostly illegal in Australia except if you are a registered shooter. All because some fucktard went on a rampage :(.Of course the crims still have them....

In a free market we would have surface to air missile batteries on every house!

That doesn't sound very cost-effective.  I'm sure some homeowners' associations, local business alliances, road co-ops, etc would pool resources to pay for their air defense, which would most likely be done by specialist firms.  (Furthermore, your property rights don't extend down to the center of the earth or up into the universe, there are certain tunneling depths and flyover altitudes where your control ends by default.)  This naturally leads to monitoring costs of who is flying near / above your slice of the atmosphere, which can be entirely automated, and as soon as a flying object starts to approach / descend down toward your property the proper defense agencies could be alerted, as would have been the case in a 9/11 type attack without the government's corrupt / incompetent defense monopoly that was forced down everyone's throats!  :x

I was hiding in the woods wearing a bulletproof bear suit, waiting for the Feds to make their move.  Unfortunately I didn't think my plan through very well - who knew there'd be other bears around, and who knew it was their mating season...

Next time it happens, run out into the backyard and start burning any random papers and soiled clothes you can get your hands on.

If I could I'd mount a surface-to-air missile battery on top of my house. Too bad my landlord might only let me mount a few solar panels and a wind turbine up there at the most :(

Thats what I wondered too. At what point is it trespassing? But then, police are always above the law so it'd be safe to assume they're exempt from trespassing. I'm willing to bet everyone in the area that has a greenhouse got the same treatment as I did. I considered, for about 3 seconds, going down to the police station and just wandering around the place, checking out their cars etc until an officer came out to ask me what I am doing, to which I'd reply "Well, you guys were in my backyard, without permision, checking up on me. I thought I'd just return the favour."
Next time, and I'm sure there'll be a next time, I'll try to remember to grab a camera, or my mobile phone.

Also, I'm pretty certain though I may be wrong, the guy that went on the rampage used a gun that was already illegal.
