I don't like sites like 4chan.org

Whatever genre of images you're looking for, it's better to get them from a decentralized source (ex. tor + ssl + irc) or at least Usenet.  Sites like 4chan centralize the Internet (i.e. the myspace / facebook google / youtube / microsoft effect), and they'd be much easier for the government to subvert.  One webmaster willing to obey a subpoena, and thousands of people who connected with their real IP's are screwed!

I was responding to Alex, because he's being all secretive about getting images from an imageboard.

Don't click on things that look like its underage fap material, you'll be okay.  Don't accept any direct downloads.  The only thing you click there is the image directly hosted in the thumbnail.

Aside from that, legal is legal and illegal is illegal.

When you're looking at stuff, don't click if its questionable.  Don't right-click/save  ANY images, unless its a stupid meme or something that makes you chuckle.

I think what Libman's saying is actually more  dangerous, because with usenet and newsgroups, you're actually saving shit to your hard drive.  Its a minor but important difference.  You can still find yourself in some problems, but owning the pix is probably worse.

(1)  Yeah, like them neo-Torquemada (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomás_de_Torquemada)s will care if the images are in your computer's temporary or permanent memory (and depending on your Web browser's settings the 4chan images can stay in the latter for quite a while).

(2)  In order to get legally-admissible evidence against you via your hard drive they need an arrest warrant, they need to find the hard drive, make sure it's not destroyed by the time they get to it, and then decrypt it.  As storage devices increase in smallness, stealth, and self-destruct functionality, the latter three become ever-more problematic for the tyrants - it will soon be possible to store terabytes of data in a dental implant you can wipe clean with a few flicks of your tongue!  This is why the fascists use centralization of the Internet for their benefit instead - if your ISP-assigned IP address is in the server / interceptor logs, then they have all the evidence they need to have their witch-burning.

(3)  This is about maximizing proliferation of free speech, not making yourself immune to persecution.

Maximize the proliferation of free speech all you want, its still on your machine, and don't be so stupid as to think the source isn't a fed.  Regardless of your  ability to out-fox the foxes, many people are less capable.  If your download comes with a worm in it, you're fucked, and it takes a while for custom-made worms and trojans to be recognized.  You think Norton is gonna spring into action if a worm starts showing up in CP files?  Think again.  Low priority.  Meanwhile, it sends back to the mothership.

You are at the mercy of your software, whether you like it or not.

The solution is to avoid things the market will not make a fuss about.  If some little haxxor worm was released and nine people got scooped up, nobody would even know.  If the feds dropped a warrant on moot, a million people would know in five minutes.

The feds are perfectly happy to ruin one person at a time.  They'll hand out medals all day long to their little nerds who run a sting on altnet, and result in four busts in six months.  They have hundreds and hundreds of little geek cocksuckers doing all sorts of nasty, and you know it.

If you're into CP, you deserve a boot in the fucking skull, no matter if there are much much much safer ways to get it.

If you're stupid enough to try and get it from one of the biggest sites on the internet, fuck you for being stupid.

sage is cake, which is a lie and a trap.  It'll push things into oblivion, eventually.  But that doesn't make a goddamn bit of difference when people just put up 404 pt #2.  They do it for the lulz

I'd rather be a janitor where people know the rules, and abide by them by their own discretion.  I've never been faced with that decision here, and don't expect to be.  I *will* bring the heat down on any asshole who posts child porn.  And I *will* make sure they get sorry.  And I'll do it in public, not as an anon fag who can just 404 a thread.  It doesn't work like that here.

You all clear on that?

I'm sure someone now and then considers me a shitbag. The problem? You assume that because I'm a shitbag I'm a fan of the child porn. I am not... at least... not in the traditional pre-pub sense.

To state that "there are safer ways to aquire cp than 4chan" as a fact does not imply "I procure cp in ways other than 4chan". Indeed, it does not imply "I procure cp" at all.

Yes, and that's why everyone should buy Alex Libman's Über-Secure Hacker Workstation 9000 - made in New Hampshire with all sorts of hardware crypto aids, built-in jamming-resistant wireless mesh networking, a virtually indestructible "once sealed never to be opened again" hardware case, and a self-destruct button via built-in canisters of acid, which are also triggered when someone tries to force open the case.  It will be used in conjunction with other efforts to create a second Internet in New Hampshire that exists entirely outside the government's control.  And, needless to say, it will be powered by our special Anarcho-Capitalist fork of OpenBSD, an operating system whose source code poetry makes Linux source code read like Marxist gibberish.  Available summer 2015.  ;)

Do you really need all that security?  Probably not, but I sure'd like to cash in on those that think they do.

My original intent of this thread was to bring up the questionable liability I had after I clicked on some pics in the sexy women section of 4chan.  You see I visit the website http://businessinsider.com (http://businessinsider.com) and one of the writers there said it was one of the best blog sites of 2009.
I personally had to find out what the fuss was all about.  I have to say I wasn't that impressed.
Back to the CP thing.  I've never sought out any shit like that and found myself confronted with what appeared to be 16-18 year old nudey pics and it scared the fuck out of me.  I left the sight never to return, cleared my history and cookies, took a shower to get clean,  drank a cold cheap beer, then went over to youporn.com  to  get the images out of my mind.

I think we can stop right there.

But...  a few random comments.

I never said 4chan was the creepiest of the net, its not even close.  Read comment, understand, comprehend, return.

The only thing thats interesting in the whole CP thing is the technology employed to acquire it.  You should realize, if not for these relatively few pedos the secure methods of data transmission would be much MORE secure, because busting pedos involves breaking the laws of dozens of different agencies.  If it was just movies, games, and music which 99% of the traffic contains, nobody would care except for the copyright owner, and even within their immense footprint they were barely able to dent the surface of torrent transfer.  But now mixed in, there are the SWAT-like tactics of anti-CP agencies and that makes it much more dangerous for all of us.  The in-roads the media industry have gained are directly linked with the willingness of government agencies to infringe upon peoples privacy, and gain warrants to search their our residences.

"traditional pre-pub sense"?!

The most common age of CP is 17 or higher (remember - the judge decides what looks under 18 and what doesn't).  Second most common is 16.  Third most common is 15.  It drops off quickly after that.  You'd have to go through 10,000 CP pictures to find one that's under 12.

Thats why you should avoid questionable shit and stick with mainstream.  2257 protects you.  The most you can get from illegal download is copyright infringement, and that would require the actual copyright owner to do a sting, which is unlikely.

Interestingly, porn dictates mediums like DVD over video disc, VHS over Beta.  Whatever format they push their stuff out on catches on quickly with people who buy the players, and Hollywood follows.  Its backwards from what people would think.

Maybe in the past. The porn industry adopted HD-DVD first, not Blu-ray.

Well, Blu-ray players are backwards compatible to play DVD format, so if I ever set up a home theater again, I'll probably get one.  If the Blu-ray format lasts.  And they get cheap.

But you're probably right.  I lean towards digital downloads, and would rather just have a laptop as a media center.  The central component days aren't behind us yet, but they're behind my tastes in hardware.  I don't really care if I set up a central stack of A/V hardware.

Yes, I'd rather just hook up my laptop to my tv screen or a larger monitor. Laptops typically come with a dvd player built in too.

I just have my desktop hooked to my 24" 1080p flat panel (my biggest screen) and play blu-ray rips off it.  Screw buying overpriced discs unless the movie is really that good.  And even then I won't be using a disc player to watch the movie.  I'll rip it to my hard disk first at full quality and watch the rip, I don't want to damage those discs.
