In every (traffic) case I've dealt with in CA, I had to specifically waive my right to a speedy trial, for more than 45 days.

Each time was as described. A line of people pleading guilty for a reduced fine. Each time, I've been the ONLY person to ask questions about rights, jurisdiction, or procedure. At trial, I've been the ONLY person to challenge the proceeding itself, instead of arguing about what did or didn't happen.

CA is a land of sheep.

I had a traffic case. Walked before the judge and tried to ask him some questions but he was short with me and wrote down no contest or w/e for me. I never claimed anything and I was kinda mad about that. I'm not about to push the buttons of some california judge.
