Pirate Radio
« on: May 16, 2008, 01:54:09 AM »

I would like to broadcast FTL in my area along with other shows.  I would like to have software set up to transfer from feed to feed at specific times.  I would probably have mp3s qued up to fill the dead air time.  I, of course, would also need a transmitter.

Do any of you have any suggestions on doing something like this?  What would be a good transmitter to get?  What about avoiding the Feds?  I have heard that crossing state lines with a broadcast is more serious.  Is this so?  I am less than a mile from the Illinois state line in NW Indiana.

Alex, please stay on topic.  (I split off his post.)

Radio still has a tremendous market penetration and listening audience.  This thread shouldn't be about anything but pirate radio.

Don't forget the antenna.

Both those sites have antennas, and that is the most important part!

Do either of these suppliers check to make sure you're licensed before selling to you?  I've tried to get some HAM radio equipment but without a license it has been difficult to do so from stores.

Also check out local HAMFests.  Often times you can find low power AM/FM transmitters and TV transmitters for a pretty good price.

Doubtful, though you should ask them.

Depends.   The antenna need not be large, but height is an important factor.  You shouldn't do pirate if you're skeered of the FCC.

30 feet wouldn't be very difficult after putting it on a house.  Also, it could be a line up a tree, right?

I'm mainly thinking about what will get the FCC to just leave me alone.  I have heard and read that they won't bother a person unless there is a complaint.  Isn't it likely that they would just shut it down at most?

I know there are stations that have existed like this for a long time.  Do any of you know who Scott Horton in Austin Texas is?  I think that is what he does.  I would like to put his show on too.  You can see his site at http://www.thestressblog.com  His is pretty much an interview show.  He has had a lot of people from LewRockwell.com, Antiwar.com, Mises.org on his show.

I remember a caller on FTL talking about doing this once.

Here's a wired.com wiki on setting up a pirate radio station.

Thanks for this.

Anybody that has success doing this, let us know here.  We can share tips.  I'm sure many of us would like to broadcast a lot of the same programming.

Some of the stuff I have been thinking of broadcasting:

* Michael Badnarik
(
http://mp3.wtprn.com/Badnarik08.html
)
Monday - Friday 7:00 am - 9:00 am CT

* Scott Horton
(http://thestressblog.com)
Monday - Friday 11:00 am-1:00 pm CT

* Marc Stevens
(http://mp3.wtprn.com/Marc08.htm)
Saturdays 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm CT

* Free Talk Live
(http://freetalklive.com)
Monday - Saturday 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm CT

Other suggestions?  I know of some, but I would like to listen to more of their programs.

BTW, there is a station that broadcasts FTL in Michigan City, Indiana, but it is too far east for me to pick up here.  I can faintly hear it in Gary though.

And I have heard that it is more of an offense to broadcast commercials on an unlicensed station.  I can't sit and edit commercials.  This won't be a money maker.  I would have to just let it go.  Do any of you know anything about this?

I have purchased a 20W FM transmitter that I received Monday (24 November).

I tried it out with the antennae sitting inside the house, and I was able to get a little over a 2 mile radius with clear reception.  I plan to put it on a pole outside on the house.  I hope I can get 5 miles.

I was trying to find an easy way to calculate population within a specified radius, but didn't see anything.  But I did find the site of a developer who has been planning a nearby retail project that has the following figures:

2007 Estimated Population
1 mile radius: 7,087
3 mile radius: 109,688
5mile radius: 242,441

I will be about 3 miles from the above mention point.  I would guess that the density surrounding me isn't too much different.

I'll probably be running recorded material until I can automate the station.  I can't baby sit it 24 hours a day, every day.

Quoted from the owners manual:

HLLY-20W IS FM A STEREO TRANSMITTER which apply PLL technology,so it’s
transmission is very stable.
HLLY-20W main board adopt the PLL FM Transmitter IC of ROHM (BH1415F),
BH1415F build in PLL、Audio aggravation and Low Pass filter, The control board is made of
AT89C205 and AT24C02, the HF amplifier is made of 2 2SC3355、1 2SC2053 and 1
2SC1972,add up to 4 grade circuit。The board adopt HF two layer PCB design,and the shell
is made of wonderful aluminum,the whole little machine is very beautiful and easy to use!

I have been playing your podcasts along with other shows for a little bit now.  I don't do them live, so maybe you don't want to put me on your affiliate list yet.  I plan to automate things to run live at some point.  The antenna that I have been using is about 30 feet from the ground to the top. That is about 620 feet above sea level.  Unfortunately there are places within a few miles where the ground is near or above 620 feet above sea level.  The coverage area seems to be spotty and and irregular.  I will likely need to get a longer pole to mount the antenna on.  I would like a clear signal that covers a 5 mile radius.   I'm thinking of adding another 20 feet or so in height.   Is this reasonable? I have had reports of being able to hear it loud and clear over 5 miles already in some locations.

Will it piss off your neighbors?  If not, it's probably reasonable.
