Property Tax
« on: January 22, 2012, 07:16:55 PM »

Should a homeowner lose their home if they are unable to or do not pay their property tax?

Should property taxes be fixed at the purchase price of a home?

Should property taxes be mandatory?

Should property taxes exist?

Should other property be taxed (livestock, vehicles, equipment, furniture, etc.)?

What are your thoughts on property taxes?

I don't have a problem with sales tax.  Property is property.  I never understood why I could own a certain thing, pay tax on it once, and be done  --  but if it's a house, pay tax every year.

Should I pay tax on owning any item if a page flips on the calendar?

We pay state sales tax on everything we buy, that should be more than enough to maintain the infrastructure of the state.

If I earn $10,000, and buy stuff with it, the state sales tax is $600.

$600 (on my part) should be sufficient to maintain WAY more than the patch directly in front of my driveway.

The excess is a surplus.  When you multiply that surplus across all properties, and consider that most families buy WAY more than $10,000 in taxable goods per year, I don't see how the state cannot run on that sales tax alone.

This is obviously an oversimplification, but when you consider the property taxes are grotesquely inflated beyond any comprehensible measure of my simple statement, I think it's pretty evident that homeowners are being ripped off by many orders of magnitude.

I love children, they're delicious.

I thought school tax was for schools, and property tax was for the municipality.

Don't they double-fuck you out there in your neck of the woods?

Yeah, they do. Well, not ME, but thats a whole different story, for another day.

I get the giant dildo of property taxes shoved in my tuckus every year, but thats about it. Nothing I can do about that. Plus, we have the extra special added bonus of paying a 10% "food and beverage" tax if we eat at a restaurant within city limits, so most people dont open restaurants in Decatur proper anymore. In fact, they've been closing down and reopening them just across the highway where there is no 10% on food and beverages. Guess what..... BUSINESS IS BOOMING ACROSS THE BRIDGE!!! Now the city of Decatur is all "boooo hoooo, we're losing tax revenue to the people across the bridge in Forsyth!! Its not fair!!!!" Now they wanna raise property taxes AGAIN to make up for the shortfall. (︶︿︶)╭∩╮ Decatur!!

Lets just put it this way....

As it is right now, even without a property tax increase, a landlord charging the going rent right now barely makes enough to cover the tax and incidental costs that come with renting to someone. Seems nuts doesn't it? Thats how the numbers work out around here though.

That too, I suppose. I was talking more about residential rents. This is a depressed area and rents are low because of this. They simply cant get the prices they need to pay the taxes and still put a few bucks in their pockets. They are still charging the same rate of property tax as they were before Firestone and a bunch of other industrial companies packed up and moved to Mexico.

Its almost like a mini Detroit here in terms of job loss. Somehow, they still think all these down on their luck unemployed people will somehow manage to pay the property tax they were able to pay when they had those good paying jobs. Its a fucked up cycle......... less jobs=less money in peoples pockets=less ability to pay property tax=less revenue=goons wanting to raise property taxes even more to make up for the shortfall.

I have heard stories about people that have to sell homes, farms, and property that have been in their family for generations due to taxes.

I recently heard a story about someone that owned their home, as it was inherited, but had lost a job and could not find another due to the economy.  This person said they were close to losing the home because they could not afford the property tax.  Have you heard of this happening?

Yep, tax sales usually happen here on a bi-weekly basis. Lots of cheap property to be had for someone with deep enough pockets.

They can't take it from you if you shoot them.

Well, for awhile anyway. Then they'll just burn you alive inside your house.

You can flim-flam your way out of it for a while..  but eventually, you're paying the "non-Bradley Tank Crash Through The Front Wall" tax.

Or, you could rent.

I voted other, because we don't own our real estate.  We rent it from the state.
