Title: Honorable Death
Post by: orion on December 02, 2008, 08:54:25 PM
My hill to die on is when government agents are taking dissidents in the middle of the night.

I don't want to seem like a bitch, but the option I like isn't there.

That being, dying honourably only after I've (we've) won.

I'd rather take myself out then give those bastards the pleasure.

Well, I don't believe in honor, so I don't know for sure how to respond.

Probably dying while throwing sand in a bad guy's face in preparation for running like hell to fight again another day.

<<<Escapes from overwhelming odds as much as possible.

I want my tombstone to say, "He took an awful lot of the bastards with him."

I want my tombstone to say, "He took an awful lot of the bastards with him."

Which doesn't sound very Christian.

afaic, if people are trying to take the lives of my friends and family, I'd be well justified in defending them from a Christian standpoint. Non-aggression is a matter of objective morality. Pacifism is a matter of personal conscience.

Thou Shalt Not Kill.

It doesn't say "except in the case of self-defense!".

You Shall Not Murder.

The word "Kill" is a mostly Catholic thing.

Alright, I'll concede that, but wasn't Jesus basically a pacifist?

Alright, I'll concede that, but wasn't Jesus basically a pacifist?

He was personally, but he made sure his disciples were armed before they went evangelizing abroad. He also died childless and poor, but many of his disciples had big, wealthy families. People are free to follow his example utterly and be pacifists, poor, and celibate, but none is required to be a Christian.

Okay, I understand that, but if the goal of being a Christian is to be as Christ-like as possible, wouldn't adopting a pacifist philosophy be the best way to go about that?

Perhaps, but as I said it's a matter of personal conviction. I don't go looking for violence, and I don't want it. My original comment was actually sort of tongue-in-cheek. But when it comes to my loved ones being threatened, I feel a moral duty to protect them. If it were possible for humans to be completely Christ-like, then there would have been no reason for Christ in the first place.

There is no way to die with honour. You can only live with honour, and that's what I intend to do.

Maybe the term should be Die With a life of honor?

Hmmm... honourable death.... I agree with the guy who said you can't die honourably, only live it, which I agree with, and therefore I'll try to live honourably and then die from a heroin overdose at age 102 or so, right before the police or somebody gets me for tazing a bunch of punk teenagers who listen to loud music/came onto my lawn.

On second thought maybe I'll go out shot by secret service after going to town in congress with a louisville slugger baseball bat named Ockham that has "Fiscal Responsibility" spelled out on it in rusty nails.

(Note to FBI types: I won't really do that, please don't come beat me up and throw me in a cage for merely thinking about something illegal.)
