Thanks for the welcomes!! And the info. I will definitely have to make it out there this year. The mountains look beautiful and I love camping/nature/the outdoors - not such a big fan of snow... but quite used to it living on Michigan's west coast.
I just got my bill today for the Michigan "Driver's Responsibility Fee" associated with my driving on a suspended license offense - 500/year for two years!! Absolutely amazing. It is supposed to exist "to promote greater traffic safety" .... *sigh* There has been a bill introduced to appeal these additional fees - thankfully I'm not the only one who thinks this is unreasonable.
I can't imagine New Hampshire has this ridiculous law. Oh - and I just wiki'd NH and no sales or personal income tax? Nice!
Yes, that is crazy. We can compare stupid taxes (fees - same thing). The Virginia Abusive Driver fee is where the state here implements additional fees or fines for people who speed, reckless drivers, and any other behavior they (states government) deem as abusive. The catch to this law is they only apply to people who live in Virginia. So, if you were to travel through here and lets say do 100 mph down the interstate. Let's say that a guy sees you driving 100mph and decides to also drive that to catch up with the hot chick in the fancy sport car. The difference being your plate says Michigan and his say Virginia. Who do think the cop is likely to pull: You for $250 (hypothetical) or $5000 for the Virginia car?
They have incentives to pull the Virginia guy, because it will bring in more fines.
It's quite sad. I am looking at how to fight it. It's obvious that the state bureaucrats will do nothing against it... except this.
Now the Governor is looking at the budget and says, that Abusive Driver thing is not pulling in the money it should. Therefore, we'll just tax the population to get the money. So, now we are stuck with the abusive driver thing AND a huge tax increase.
Hope this idea does not catch on... and it makes NH look more and more like the shining beacon to move towards.
