That ain't forever.  Eventually, you go to "gen-pop". 

Hospital is like a limbo area.  They may hit you with some psych, determine if you're gonna kill yourself.

They also have to keep you sane to be in your hearings.  You have more rights when you're not yet found guilty, so they keep you safe.   

After the hearings and trial and sentencing, you're no longer afforded "hospital" as easily.  You either have to be verifiably sick, injured, or keep trying to kill yourself.  Which will probably eventually work  -- because if you're a known suicide, they might just kill your ass and say they didn't find you in time.  Lynch the daylights out of ya, with a fuckin' bedsheet.

Pretending you're a suicide case is pretty much a death sentence.
