General / "Through the Wormhole: Can We Eliminate Evil?"
« on: June 07, 2014, 01:22:48 PM »
I'm a fan of the series "Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman." One of the episodes I have on my DVR right now is "Can We Eliminate Evil?"

It was a particularly well-done episode that discusses human behavior and the human brain, with regard to evil and psychopathy. It even wanders into socialism (without saying so) and fascism (without pointing a finger at the US.) It ends with positive notes about violence decreasing. A researcher actually used cooperation and violence in the same sentence. What's cool about that is that it wasn't stated in the context of government coercion being a positive, but the implication seemed to be there that it was a negative (though he did refer to "the rule of law" as a positive, which seems to be an interesting point of discussion amongst self-described libertarians.) I found the show fascinating.

-----

After I posted that, I saw the very end, the closing by Morgan Freeman. It disturbingly referenced, positively, the possibility of identifying people prone to violence and "stopping them" before they do evil, which I still consider an evil concept, regardless of what we supposedly "know."

Guns, Drugs, and Crazy Independence Stuff / Magical Butter (discount info)
« on: September 03, 2013, 01:01:21 PM »

Just found this thing on PuffItUp.com. It "automatically" makes butter/oil/tincture. I'd been looking for a simple way to get exactly the right temps for tincture, and hell, at their discount price, it just isn't worth it. The added benefit is it does oils and butter too, so no more straining the water out of butter either. This thing looks awesome and gets great reviews, so I can't wait until it arrives.

Normal price is not cheap, at $175 but given what it is, I can understand it. I got it for $133.44, which is their price ($157) minus 15% summer discount code (summer.) I didn't see a better price from a "legit" source (I.E., warranty covered.)

Give how much time I fucked with filtering, re-reading documentation so I don't screw up, etc., it's a bargain...and no, I'm not getting anything for the plug. I'm just happy to hear someone designed the thing. I predict it's one of many products we'll see as pot gets more mainstream (i.e. "legal.")

Guns, Drugs, and Crazy Independence Stuff / Shipping Pot
« on: August 27, 2013, 12:40:37 PM »
I've heard from various sources that it's less risky to mail pot than it is to travel with it. So where the hell are you supposed to mail it? I'm guessing mailing it to your hotel room isn't a good idea. Then there's the matter of the return address....

Has anyone here ever done this, or known someone who does?

It used to be relatively safe to travel with baked goods, I used to just toss cookies in tupperware and throw them in the cooler. I'm told that since Colorado A64, cops in other states are harassing drivers in cars with Colorado plates. I'm considering an electric cooler in the trunk. I don't smoke, nor do I wander around with raw pot in my car, so I'm guessing it's unlikely I'll be found out through 4th-amendment-respectful methods...not sure about a dog (don't know what there IS to smell.)

I've been thinking if things got bad enough, I'd rig something into the console which would allow me to dump the small amount I'd have if stopped. Not sure if/how that would work, exactly. Also not sure if I can coax myself to do the actual dumping. If it was recreational, I'd just leave it at home...but it's not.

It gives you this kind of bullshit:

"you are doing that too much. try again in 7 minutes."

Note, that it doesn't tell you what the fuck you're doing that it doesn't like. Looking up the text seems to indicate it's for commenting more frequently than some stupid fuck wants you to.

BTW, this is in response to commenting ON THE FREETALKLIVE SHOW PREP posts.

General / More states on a path to cannabis "legalization"

WTF is wrong with New Hampshire?

Lawmakers To Announce Introduction of Marijuana Legalization

At least four state legislatures will consider replacing marijuana prohibition with regulation

On Election Day, voters in the states of Colorado and Washington approved ballot initiatives to remove criminal penalties for adult marijuana use and regulate the substance in a manner similar to alcohol. State legislators from Rhode Island and Maine on Thursday will join the Marijuana Policy Project on a teleconference press call to announce that they are introducing similar bills to tax and regulate marijuana in their state legislatures.

Joining on the call will be Rhode Island Rep. Edith Ajello (D-District 3, Providence) and Maine Rep. Diane Russell (D-District 120, Portland). Both of these lawmakers have supported marijuana reform legislation in previous sessions. The Rhode Island Legislature passed medical marijuana legislation earlier this year.

Robert Capecchi, legislative analyst for the Marijuana Policy Project, will be introducing the representatives and moderating the call. In addition to Rhode Island and Maine, similar proposals will be submitted in at least two other states -- Vermont and Massachusetts.

"Last week, Washington and Colorado replaced their states' prohibitions on marijuana with a system of regulation and taxation," Capecchi said. "Both measures passed with roughly 55 percent voting in favor.

"Gallup found 50 percent support for making marijuana legal last year, and that support has risen over the years," Capecchi said. "We are passing the tipping point when it comes to this issue.

"Unfortunately, lawmakers have traditionally been behind public opinion when it comes to marijuana policy reform," Capecchi said. "With these thoughtful legislators in at least four states planning on introducing sensible proposals to remove criminal penalties and regulate marijuana in their states, it's clear that ending marijuana prohibition is gaining momentum."

General / "Revolution" sucks
« on: November 16, 2012, 01:23:45 PM »
I can't stand to watch it any more. It was a guilty (pleasure?) for a few weeks. I kept waiting for it to develop into something...I wish I had all that wasted time back. It's probably worse than V or Flash Forward.

On IMDB, there's a lot of "typical JJ Abrams trash" comments. I'm starting to agree. The only thing of his I've seen and liked was the Star Trek film, which a lot of serious trekkies wanted to kill him for. Is it too much to hope that Abrams gets black listed?

Marijuana with no high
This will be a godsend for me if it pans out.

When choosing a margarita recipe from the options available at Costco, one may choose to use their pre-mixed margaritas or their margarita mix with one of various different tequila selections.  Which, however, is the best value?  The following calculations may provide a useful guide for frugal inebriation. (Self-mix is per directions @ 4oz margarita mix per 1.5oz tequila.  Prices are as observed at Costco, Southwest Denver location.)

ProductPrice$/oz$/DrinkAlcohol %/volAlcohol oz/DrinkAlcohol $/Oz
1.75L Margarita with "Gold" Tequila 12.9% alc$9.99$0.17$0.9312.9%0.71$1.31
1.75L Cuervo Gold 40% alc$24.99$0.42$0.8710.91%0.60$1.45
1.75L Kirkland Silver Tequila 40% alc$18.99$0.32$0.7210.91%0.60$1.20
1.0L Kirkland Anejo Gold Tequila 40% alc$21.99$0.65$1.2110.91%0.60$2.02
3.5L Kirkland Margarita Mix$6.99$0.06

As we can see from the table, pure economy may lead one to choose self-mixing with Kirkland "Silver" tequila.  This provides a margarita that costs $0.72, or $1.20 per ounce of pure alcohol.

Interestingly, the best choice involving "gold" tequila would be the pre-mixed option, at $0.93/margarita, but $1.31 per ounce of pure alcohol consumed (what's drinking for, anyway?)

If, however, one wishes to still drink "gold" tequila, but wishes a lower price per margarita, rather than lower price per ounce of alcohol consumed, the best option may be to use Cuervo Gold tequila, at a price of $0.87 per margarita, though that will cost $1.45 per ounce of pure alcohol consumed.

Finally, if one wishes to savor the most luxurious experience, damn the price, one may wish to consume the option including Costco's Kirkland Anejo Gold Tequila, at a cost of $1.21 per drink, and a whopping $2.02 per ounce of pure alcohol consumed.

Copious amounts of tequila were consumed during the process of collecting and processing these valuable data points.  I hope they prove useful for your margarita consumption endeavors.

Sincerely,

What's the frequency, Kenneth?

General / So you think money is the root of all evil?

Just a reminder.

Text of D'anconia's "money" speech

17 minutes of audio:
Audio of D'anconia's "money" speech, Part 1
Audio of D'anconia's "money" speech, Part 2

The meat:

"To the glory of mankind, there was, for the first and only time in history, a country of money – and I have no higher, more reverent tribute to pay to America, for this means: a country of reason, justice, freedom, production, achievement. For the first time, man's mind and money were set free, and there were no fortunes-by-conquest, but only fortunes-by-work, and instead of swordsmen and slaves, there appeared the real maker of wealth, the greatest worker, the highest type of human being – the self-made man – the American industrialist.

"If you ask me to name the proudest distinction of Americans, I would choose – because it contains all the others – the fact that they were the people who created the phrase 'to make money'. No other language or nation had ever used these words before; men had always thought of wealth as a static quantity – to be seized, begged, inherited, shared, looted, or obtained as a favor. Americans were the first to understand that wealth has to be created. The words 'to make money' hold the essence of human morality.

"Yet these were the words for which Americans were denounced by the rotted cultures of the looters' continents. Now the looters' credo has brought you to regard your proudest achievements as a hallmark of shame, your prosperity as guilt, your greatest men, the industrialists, as blackguards, and your magnificent factories as the product and property of muscular labor, the labor of whip-driven slaves, like the pyramids of Egypt. The rotter who simpers that he sees no difference between the power of the dollar and the power of the whip, ought to learn the difference on his own hide – as, I think, he will.

"Until and unless you discover that money is the root of all good, you ask for your own destruction. When money ceases to be the tool by which men deal with one another, then men become the tools of men. Blood, whips and guns – or dollars. Take your choice – there is no other – and your time is running out."

General / $39 Experiment
« on: June 10, 2012, 01:32:07 PM »
Sometimes I'm searching the net and I find something intriguing and altogether different in the Google hit list than I was looking for, so I just have to click.  This was one of those things.  Here's a teaser and a link:

Who I Am
My name is Tom Locke. I'm not poor; I'm not rich. I'm just an average guy. In fact, who I am is actually irrelevant to this experiment. I just figured I'd introduce myself for the sake of formality.

How This Started
I was sitting around one day, skimming through a pile of bills that I needed to pay. I looked over at a new, unopened roll of stamps that I had sitting in front of me, and I thought to myself, "$39... for a roll of stamps? Geez... You can't get much for $39 nowadays. Or can you...?"

The Idea
The way I looked at it, if I took $39 and went to buy groceries, I wouldn't be able to get all that much. On the flipside, if I took $39 to a casino and lost it all, I wouldn't be all that upset. With that said, I decided I was going to try something — I was going to take my roll of stamps and send 100 letters to 100 different companies, asking for free stuff. I figured that I couldn't do any worse than blowing the $39 at a casino, and who knows... maybe a few of these places would actually send me something good.
