Promoting FTL at Rest Areas
« on: June 19, 2009, 01:12:58 AM »

Hey!

Everyone has seen them.  Drive on an interstate for forty or so minutes in any direction and you are likely to see an interstate rest area.  They may be called different things in different parts of the country but there is one thing the usually have in common, several stacks of free magazines and newspapers.  The free info promotes the area, attractions, local events and hotels.  People frequently pick up these free reads on their way out of rest areas.

That's where I got the idea, why not enhance the magazines and newspapers with something else for the people to read?  It's simple.  Go to a stack of magazines.  Put a pro-freedom flyer in the first fifteen magazines of the stack.  Repeat until you have put flyers in all of the stacks.  One your way back home, you can do the same thing in the rest area on the other side of the interstate.

There is a good chance you are driving somewhere this year, and likely, you will pass a couple rest areas.  Maybe you are traveling to watch someone you know graduate, get married or for the holidays?  Maybe you are driving to Porcfest, the Liberty Forum or some other event?  Why not spend twenty minutes and promote FTL, the FSP or some other pro-freedom organization?  It's quick, easy and fun.

That's ok.  See this thread on doing something similar at libraries, http://bbs.freetalklive.com/index.php?topic=29724.0  Keep in mind that some libraries have stacks of free magazines near the entrance, so you can just enhance them if you don't want to actually look up books.

So I did this at a Rest Area on the way up to Porcfest with another fellow freedom lover also on this BBS :)

Three different types of FTL flyers were on a table next to the FTL broadcast table while the show was live at Porcfest.  Hopefully someone grabbed some of the free FTL flyers and is promoting FTL right now!

I did this on the way to Burning Porcupine and was harassed by a government bureaucrat - a Department of Transportation worker.

I sat down on a bench in the Rest Area.  I took possession of a stack of free magazines.  I enhanced my free magazines with FTL flyers.  I put my free magazines back on the free magazine rack.  I did this with a few different types of free magazines.  When I was just about out of flyers and enhancing my last stack of free magazines, the DOT employee came over to me.  He had just finished having a conversation about how hard it is to find a job with another Rest Area customer.

My employee asked what I was doing.  I said I was enhancing magazines.  He asked if I had permission.  I said I did.  He said by whom.  I said by some government source (I forget which one I mentioned).  He questioned my honesty.  I finished and placed my free magazines back on the free magazine rack.  I said I was going to leave. and gave him a flyer.  He followed me out and took down my plates.  I don't know why he did that.  Since he never asked me to leave or asked me to stop, I was under the impression that it wasn't a big deal.

I drove off to Burning Porcupine.
