For stuffiness I've found a mild hot sauce in soup can help. It doesn't even have to sting or anything. Just be warned, if you have stuffiness plus runny-ness then you'll get more runny. >_>
-
Doin' it now. Miso + Texas Pete.

I've found the sauna or steam room loosens up the sinuses. I prefer Ricola original cough drops for any cough. As crazy as it may sound, exercising at least enough to sweat seems to help--as long as you aren't coughing and irritating your lungs more with added breathing.
The most important thing--and you hear it all the time--is probably to keep hydrated. Keep caffeine to a minimum. It will dehydrate you more easily when you have a virus. I drink a lot of sugar free drinks. Excessive sugar will sap you of your energy, rather than helping. Obviously, water is okay, but it doesn't really satisfy me, as I usually drink iced tea all day.
Spicy soups seem to make me feel better (I sometimes eat one of those cups of ramen, and add cayenne pepper powder--sometimes just broth from bouillon with cayenne added provides sinus relief.) My favorite is Tom Yum Goong, Thai spicy lemon grass soup with with shrimp. You can probably also get Kimchi spicy noodle bowls at WalMart in the asian section.
-
Ricola cough drops are good if you've got an accompanying sore throat (I am particularly prone to them, unfortunately :(). I always enjoy showering and generating a lot of steam. It helps moisturize and can help break stuff up. I also use Zicam nasal spray which makes you pretty much instantly need to blow your nose. It's "homeopathic", but it must have something in it that actually works.
This should also go without saying, but drink a lot of water.
-
Got a head cold? Get rid of the head. Then you'll just be cold.

Before trying error's method, you could try hot lemonade with added honey, and great big bowls of Vidalia Onion Soup.
I make it with beef stock (usually homemade), a pound or more of sliced vidalias, and an entire bulb's worth of crushed garlic cloves.
Before adding the broth, the vidalias and garlic are slow cooked in butter, and sprinkled with sea salt and fresh cracked pepper.
If that doesn't help you feel at least a little bit more human, you can always move on to Madame Guillotine.
-
Cranberry juice coctail - lots of it.
-
Cocaine.
-
I'll try everything but error and Lindey's suggestions :)
Been drinking green tea all day mixed with lemonade. Having some really garlicy/oniony guacamole now, maybe that'll be close enough to Joy's suggestion. Don't have any Ricola but I'd like to.
Weird cold.. comes in phases where I feel pretty good, then crash again.

That's too bad. Error and I are fucking geniuses, and our suggestions were the best.
-
Lots of water.
-
Water, juices with vitamin C, and soup should help. Hydration will make you feel better, and the vitamins, and protein in easily digestible form help out.
-
Smoke pot.
Seriously, it works.

Try to keep the green tea to a minimum, as it has caffeine.

If you have eucalyptus, make some tea out of it. You can probably get it at the organic foods section of a major grocery store. Sweeten it with honey*, and add about a half-shot of whiskey per two cups.
*The honey only works if it was made in your area, and only if you've been in your area for a few years. This has to do with your body syncing with the antihistamines and antiseptic qualities of local pollen. You can find a more scientific explanation, I'm sure.
-
Drink a lot of water. Think a gallon an hour for four or five hours. Then take a nap when you wake up you should be fine.
-
Now I'm shuffling from the fridge to the pisser all the time :)
Thanks for the local honey idea, I'd forgotten about that. My grandparents soaked Ginseng root in whiskey and added local honey. That was their rememdy.. but I'm working so not drinking just yet. And the Alka Seltzer cold stuff has me a little loopy. And I don't have any Ginseng.. but still got the whiskey!
Also- hadn't thought about caffeine in the tea.. been downing that stuff.

You'd probably be dead from elecrolyte imbalance if you drank that much water in a short period of time.

This. And puking from water intoxication.
-
Now that you mention it, sometimes my wife boils ginger tea (I.E., boils water with ginger root in it), adds sugar and has me drink it. It soothes the throat, loosens the sinuses, warms and hydrates all at the same time.
-
I had a head cold that turned into nasty sinus problems recently. I used SinuCleanse ($15 at local pharmacy) a few times and my sinuses cleared up in a few days. You could give that a try. A Neti Pot is the same thing and is available at Walmart I think.

Neti Pot? Is this a pot with something in it you buy whole? Sorry, don't mean to be a smartass--it just seems like an odd name.

I do it whenever I get sick, but I am six foot tall 175lbs. So if you are a smaller person you might want to adjust.

Decapitation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decapitation) cures all ills!
Seriously, Vitamin C megadosage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitamin_C_megadosage) works for me. (Assuming you're not pregnant of course.) Take supplements and drink lots of juices. My mom used to make this hot pulpy cranberry drink when I was a kid. Avoid anything that'll dehydrate you, especially alcohol. It's like evicting rioters from a convention hall: first you need security guards (your immune system) to surround them, and then you need to push them out. The fastest way any poison or virus leaves your body is urine. The second fastest is sweat, but the latter isn't good if you have heart problems.

The Neti Pots are a sort of tea pot thing to flush out the nose. I haven't tried one, but I wouldn't mind.. I sometimes just look into the water coming out of the shower and get some in the nose that way.
For those who may still be concerned (thank you lovely dears) -
A Vics Inhaler did a great job of clearing up the sinuses.. once I could get a bit of air in, the inhaler was great.
Ricolla took care of the sore/scratchy throat.
Whisky, warm water and local honey seemed to do a great deal of good- but by the time I tried that my condition may have been on the upswing.
The demon attempted to invade my lungs, and caused some alarm when I began coughing stuff up.. but that went away in a day or so.

I just drink when I'm thirsty. The body's good that way.

The only way to prevent colds is to pass legislation against getting colds. Walking around with a sickness is directly affecting other peoples right to health. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Well this thread almost made me post a joke that would have made me feel fucking old.
But error had already done it so skated on that one.

When I've got a nasty cold....like, say, NOW....and it comes complete with a sore throat from sinus drainage and not being able to breathe through the nose all night long....
I put honey and bourbon in my coffee, which seems to help.
I'll just get it over with, so none of you have to: yes, I suppose you could consider it the "swine" flu.....
-
I have a sip of whisky nearly every night. Maybe there's a tolerance there or somethin.
I haven't had any pukin or shittin issues, so I don't think it's swine re.. oh, sorry.. I mean H1N1 related- but I do have a cough. I'm figuring that's cause I smoke though.

Molon Labe

Molon Labe
means what?
-
Molon Labe
means what?
It translates, roughly, as "Google is your friend."
Actually:
The Greek phrase Molōn labe! (Μολὼν λάβε; approximate Classical Greek pronunciation [molɔ̀ːn labé], Modern Greek [moˈlon laˈve]), meaning "Come and take them!", is a classical expression of defiance reported by Plutarch in response to the Persian Army's demand that the Spartans surrender their weapons. It corresponds roughly to the modern equivalent English phrase "over my dead body", "bring it on" or, most closely, "come and get it".

I had some pretty shitty sinus pain earlier. I think I'm allergic to something in my house. Jizz thinks it's the air conditioning that needs to be cleaned out. I know I'm allergic to the detergent the 'rents use on their laundry (and on the towels) because it makes me break out and itch. And it gives me a terrible headache. I buy the free & clear detergent and fabric softener for myself now, but the nastyness still sneaks on to the towels and wash cloths so I find myself with a runny nose, itchy eyes, and a mild rash from that shit. Also, we have two dogs...so...I'm fucked.
-
I've had some crazy sinus stuff the last few days. Finally, seems to be under control. I took ibuprofen for the sore throat from the drainage (half in pill form, and half in the form of children's ibuprofen suspension that I gargled and swallowed), Sudafed, and Claritin. I hope it stays under control.

If tomorrow all the things were gone I'd worked for all my life,
And I had to start again with just my children and my wife,
I'd thank my lucky stars to be living here today,
'Cause the flag still stands for freedom
and they can't take that away.
I'm proud to be an American where at least I know I'm free,
And I won't forget the men who died who gave that right to me,
And I gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today,
'Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land God Bless the U.S.A.
From the lakes of Minnesota to the hills of Tennessee,
Across the plains of Texas from sea to shining sea.
From Detroit down to Houston and New York to L.A.,
There's pride in every American heart
and it's time we stand and say:
I'm proud to be an American where at least I know I'm free,
And I won't forget the men who died who gave that right to me,
And I gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today,

To start with, try garlic, Either Pure-gar or minced raw garlic added to food. Don't mix garlic with drugs that may irritate your stomach, e.g., aspirin or ibuprofen.
I use it for colds and flu. It works! Use it conservatively, until you learn how much your stomach can tolerate.
In a deadly flu pandemic, it may save your life.
From lef.org: http://www.lef.org/protocols/infections/common_cold_01.htm (http://www.lef.org/protocols/infections/common_cold_01.htm)
Garlic. With all the high-tech advances occurring in medicine, garlic would appear to be a relic of the past. Yet the scientific literature documents that garlic has powerful effects against certain viruses.
For instance, one recent study tested one capsule daily of an allicin-containing garlic supplement (like Pure Gar) from November through February on a group of 146 volunteers (Josling P 2001). Half the group received the garlic while the unfortunate other half got a placebo. The placebo group had 63 percent more common cold infections compared to the garlic group. Even more significant, those in the garlic group who did catch a cold had symptoms for an average of only 1.52 days compared to 5.01 days for the placebo group.
The doctors who conducted this garlic study concluded the following: “An allicin-containing supplement can prevent attack by the common cold virus.” Considering the number of people afflicted with a cold each year, this should have been the lead news story of the day. The study was buried in a scientific journal while the medical establishment still states that there is no cure for the common cold.
Yet a Chinese study showed that (at least in the test tube), garlic is more effective than ribavirin in inhibiting viruses that attack the intestinal tract (Luo R et al 2001). The Life Extension Foundation has recommended ribavirin to treat various viral infections since 1983 but, in this particular study, garlic was shown to be superior.
A number of published studies indicate that both high-allicin garlic (such as Pure Gar) and aged garlic (such as Kyolic aged garlic) support healthy immune function while exerting antiviral effects (Guo NL et al 1993; Josling P 2001; Kyo E et al 2001; Liu ZF et al 2004; Moon DG et al 2000; Tsai Y et al 1985; Weber ND et al 1992). Garlic, a low-cost alternative, may be nature's most powerful weapon against certain viruses.

Whoa!
You can smell the sarcasm OK way up there in the great north can't ya?
Good weekend though. Fireworks at home, pickin' tomatoes & cukes in the garden, waterhose fightin.. and for the Holiday I bought and have nearly finished reading with my son, Animal Farm. Spent a couple hours building a monster Lego thing too.
And yeah- garlic.. I'm a believer.
Rough chopped garlic, some ginger & lemon warmed up with some V8 does help.

I've been feeling fine lately. Thanks for your cards.

Zinc lozenges with Echinacea root in them. Anytime I feel even a little bit of stuffiness or itchy throat coming on, I pop a few of those and it always goes away pretty quick. Fishermans friend lozenges work pretty good too, but they taste like a dead raccoons asshole, so maybe take a pass on those.
-
This one's a bad one. Alka Seltzer's knockin' me out.
-
nyquil - its still legal..
-
Airborne (CVS generic) is THE SHIT.
Anytime that I think I might be getting sick, I take two tablets, put'em in a glass of water, and drink some bubbly yummyness. Works every time.
-
Garlic, raw garlic, my aunts would eat whole cloves whenever they felt a cold coming on. Oil of Oregano, take orally, one drop two times a day to start, up to one drop 4 times a day. Mix the oil with one teaspoon of something sweet so you don't throw-up from the awful taste. It's an antibiotic and an antiviral. You can do the towel over head thing to, put 2-3 drops of Oil of Oregano in a bowl of boiling water (1/2 cup). Cover your head with a towel and breath in the steam for 10 minutes. It will sterilize water as well, although I wouldn't rely on just it to make water safe to drink, 1 to 4,000.

I won't be trying that old French holistic approach!
Ephedrine is out.. even the Pseudo kind. I'd rather have the cold than feel like I've eaten a bowl of caffeine.
Airborne has been recommended to me twice now, I'll try that stuff.
No time for garlic as a preventative. Earlier in the day that I got sick I was out walking around with my daughter on my shoulders, didn't feel a thing. That evening I was laid out. Still hacking stuff up now.
Been taking Mucinex to thin out the stuff, and Claritin to keep the stuff from dripping down.
-
We didn't have any garlic around when this cold hit 2 days ago, so I used some old Alka Seltzer Cold stuff and Mucinex. Don't know if it was because the stuff was old, or if I took too much or if combining the two meds is bad, but last night I felt like I was on speed. I hate speed.
There was no rapid heartbeat but I couldn't seem to be still. I think I experienced a low grade case of Autism along with my fever. Really weird.
