Title: Why does God in the Bible say his name is Jealous? Happy Winter Solstice
Post by: david7777 on December 21, 2013, 08:36:23 PM
see Exodus 34:14
"Then the Lord said:"..."Do not worship any other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.""

"10Then the Lord said: “I am making a covenant with you. Before all your people I will do wonders never before done in any nation in all the world. The people you live among will see how awesome is the work that I, the Lord, will do for you. 11Obey what I command you today. I will drive out before you the Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. 12Be careful not to make a treaty with those who live in the land where you are going, or they will be a snare among you. 13Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones and cut down their Asherah poles.a 14Do not worship any other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God."

Happy Winter Solstice, I can not wait till Easter...

Can't tell for sure if this is a sincere question or not, but in the chance that is was a sincere question, or someone else reads it looking for thoughts, I provide to you my earnest response with another scripture, found in Exodus 20:5 " Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;"

This verse actually comes straight from the "10 Commandments" Whenever in the scriptures God is called "Jealous" it is in reference to the 10 Commandments where we were commanded to not have any other gods before Him. Which is another great question that takes a lot of personal evaluation: "What is putting other gods before Him?"

What does any of that have to do with the Bible?

It's not so much a matter of "fairness" as it is more of a sociological understanding of His creation, in this case you have a family who has turned from God and is worshiping other gods, we see even today that the kids of that family will continue to do the same because that is what was taught in the home, and it can take sometimes 3 or 4 generations to break that cycle. We often look at the consequences of our choices as some sort of punishment from God, or we look at His word and think "well that doesn't sound fair" and then blame God and say that He is unfair, which is completely misplaced, God can no more bend or change Universal Laws then we can change the laws of physics. If there is a universal law that exists that states "x action is a sin, and the consequence for x is y" then God is bound by those laws.
