I come around about once a month to see what's happened. Maybe I post, maybe I don't, but I think the FB explanation is the proper one. Why? Because there's hardly been anyone *new* coming here. Most folks I've seen in terms of new faces are on reddit these days. That includes /r/Libertarian, /r/Austrian_Economics, /r/MarketAnarchism, and etc. And we're not the only ones seeing the decline btw. Mises.org's own forums are pretty much dead aside from the occasional progressive troll that comes in to stir the pot. Forums, like news groups and gopher sites, are dead. Ours is an unscaling technology, and it's not sexy anymore even though it had the potential to allow for the greatest distribution of communication power in history. People like sexy, shiny stuff over complex roll-your-own. Get use to it.

Edit: Also Second life has been turning into a dead zone as well. Basically, the dream of a distributed Internet is dead save for those of us working on stuff like Freedombox and a few other pro-user technologies.

Facebook is a fad, and the way they betray the trust of their users, it's only a matter of time before their membership runs away at full speed.  Tip to FTL: stop doing anything solely on facebook.  I won't go there for your promotions, and neither will a lot of other people.

I think the centralisation of the Internet will continue despite the flubs at FB. But...! I think we'll see the backlash fuel the decentralisation further down the road to viability. Especially with folks focusing on constructing private wireless networks (including satellites). The missing piece is funding. If kickstarter is evidence of anything, it's the fact there's still plenty of funds freely available for a quiet evolution from a central Internet.

I'd agree that some centralization is clearly inevitable.  Looking at other industries, consolidation (which I'm taking as the same thing) simply happens.  On the other hand, not everyone does all their shopping at WalMart and Target, and I don't think the politics of it has much to do with it.  I do think competing networks have a big chance against the internet.  I'm way behind on the technology, but the system they discussed on the show about a week ago (that was being used in conjunction with bitcoin wallets) sounded interesting.  Besides, people are going to get tired of governments having their hands in THIS 'net.
