I dont think Paul owes the guy anything, because Ron Paul is a trademark.

When the guy bought the domain, he agreed to a contract that stated the domain name he was buying didnt’t infringe on any trademark rights of a third party and if it did, he agrees to arbitration if the said third party, submits a claim.

Ron Paul is subnitting a trademark / bad faith claim and doing things right in my opinion. Everything is libertarian to me. Its not anarchist, but its libertarian.

I'm not a big fan of intellectual property at all, but in this situation I'm not all that comfortable with people bashing Ron Paul over this.

The fact that you even have to pay to register a url is kind of odd.  I don't see what exactly you are paying for in that situation.  You could say that paying for them discourages people from buying a bunch up but that isn't true because it hasn't stopped people from doing just that. 

Kevin Smith(the guy who made Clerks.) didn't have his url for his podcast called Smodcast.  He had to pay some guy five or six thousand dollars just to get it.  Sure it was dumb of Smith not to get it to begin with, but making money that way seems somewhat dirty to me.

Overall I'm kind of split on this situation.  It is dumb for anyone not to get the url for their name especially if they are in the public eye or use it professionally.

It's a tough situation because it is still somewhat of a new thing.  I know Adam Curry the old MTV guy originally registered mtv.com for them back in 93 or 94 because they were too dumb to do it themselves.  He worked on mtv.com under some sort of loose contract with them and then they decided he couldn't have any part in it.  It ended in a big lawsuit in which I'm pretty sure Adam Curry got a decent settlement because of the time he put in on the site while employed by them.  That is a different situation than this one though.
