The problem with these checkpoints is that they're warrantless, arbitrary searches. This goes against all standards of civilized behavior and is not tolerable in a free society.  Not only are checkpoints violating our rights they're not effective. "Traditional police patrols are three times more likely to locate genuinely impaired drivers than these suspicionless checkpoints," according to James Babb, founder of the Valley Forge Revolutionaries. "So not only are these checkpoints blatantly immoral and illegal, they're also a waste of police time and tax dollars. It's long past time someone took a stand for fiscal responsibility, the rule of law, and plain common sense."

I've been intending to do a U-turn right in front of one of those checkpoints the next time I see one, specifically so they'll come after me and find I'm stone cold sober.  Haven't seen one for several years now, though.

When I went through an unemployed stretch, I'd sometimes notice cops at their usual speed trap down the street from where I live, and if I didn't have anything else to do for a couple hours, I'd stand their and warn motorists about the speed trap.  I was interviewed by the cops a few times, asking me what I was doing, and I told them I was warning motorists that they should slow down.  They obviously didn't like it, but didn't do anything more.  They probably could claim that you're causing a distraction to drivers (which one of the cops interviewing me claimed) but they didn't write me up.  Of course, if I'm a distraction, I'm pretty sure their speed trap is.

In fact, I made that very point about the en masse ticketing operation they like to run on the freeway where there's a dozen cars playing tag team with radar operators.  The cure of the state is worse than the disease...or to quote Harry Browne, I think, "The state is a disease masquerading as its own cure."
