A few times a year our neighborhood gets the grills out and has a meetup. This evening it was hosted at my place. I live on a cul-de-sac, have a decent sized yard, and let my dog run around outside sometimes- but I'm always outside when he is. "Inu" is a black lab about 11 years old- he is protective but not aggressive.. if someone approaches the house (as in right in our driveway or door) he barks like a vicious beast- otherwise he's all waggly-tailed and nothing but nice.
So as I was setting up some chairs, and another older couple were preparing their grill, Mr. Crotchety from down the street comes to check out what's going on.
(I should mention that I have never had a run in with any neighbors before, ever. Except the bunch that stole my lawnmower awhile back- but that's different.)
I'd met Mr. Crotchety before at a couple of meetups and just chalked his crotchetiness up to his being an older fella. But today, my dog waggled his way up to the corner to greet the guy- and he started yelling at me to "GET THIS DOG ON A LEASH!". I clap and whistle to call Inu back, but alas, I am too late. My Inu has already begun sniffing Mr. Crotchety's shoes, and bashing his shins with wags of his tail.
Then Inu dashes into another neighbors yard and takes a pee. I continued on to greet the guy, extending my hand with a smile, give a "Howyadoin"- and the guy says "Your dog just attacked me."
"He what? He's a friendl..."
"Your dog just attacked me."
"Uhh, nooo.. that wasn't an attack.."
*stare down commences, his fueled by anger and mine by WTF?*
"He attacked me. He has to be kept on a leash. You don't know my history. The law says that a dog has to be kept on a leash outside your yard."
..now Inu comes back to see what we're talkin' about, and licks the guys leg (before I could be the hero and beat him all the way back home).
Now the guy has a twitching eye and says "I'm uncomfortable. This is very uncomfortable to me. You don't now my history."
"I am sorry about that, he won't do anything to hur.."
"Your dog attacked me."
"Well- I think most people would consider that a greeting but of you want to consider it an atta..."
"I was once bitten by a 'friendly dog' and I could care less. You don't know my history. The law says a dog must be kept on a leash if it is outside your yard."
And the he leaves- and doesn't show up at the BBQ- where later I'm congratulated by other neighbors for having the dog 'that chased him away'. In about 20 minutes the story had grown to him being chased away by my dog. I'm further informed that the old coot might call the po-po!
