I didn't take the time to research them, but most establishments whose domain name has a dash or a number (or both) have rather limited Web budgets. Most small religious organizations rely on volunteer talent to develop their Web-site. If only one good Flash guy volunteers, and he wants to do this his way, then, well, that's that.
Also, we are not their target audience. We can't judge the appropriateness of their Web-site by our own reactions. Do any of us care enough about this oddity to finance a scientific survey of a statistically significant sample size of people who fit the demographic and psychological profile they are targeting? I for one do not, so this mystery is likely to remain unsolved, at least not by me.
