For those that still use the evil Facebook...Razz

https://www.facebook.com/earthship?ref=ts&fref=ts

There is also the second DVD for the Earthship Seminar which goes into water, energy, food etc. Really interesting so far. If I had the dough it would certainly be something I would look into doing.

Living in a trailer through a NH Winter is challenging. Just FYI. Also, are you able to scrape together $300k+ without a bank loan since banks aren't going to lend for this construction?

I'm playing Devil's Advocate here because I would love for this idea to succeed and you have to be aware of the very real obstacles to overcome if you're going to do that.

I am sure there are some low-paying service jobs within 30 mins of Grafton but no major cities so professionals who can make the kind of money to have a house like this are going to find it challenging to work from there.

It depends which part of Grafton. Part of Grafton is on or near R 4A including the Grafton Pond area. Downtown Lebanon is 25min to 35min from that part of Grafton. Dartmouth is an additional 5 minutes. There are also high tech companies in that area.
This is the part of Grafton I'm talking about. http://forum.freestateproject.org/index.php?topic=24333.0

Yikes! My uncle is a fellow traveller, and built his own home, then sold it. I've been trying to get him interested in earthships. He used to dig basements for a living. I've wondered a lot about why earthships don't have basements...even if just for storage.

I love basements. Something very cozy and safe about them.

Earthships are basements. As you build your tire wall, you dig down into the earth from inside the ring. You are digging your first floor under the surface. Basements are usually built below the surface and then you start building the first floor on ground level. That's how you lose all the natural insulation provided by the ground. If you need a basement for storage, you would just build a one room add-on at the end of your complex. There are some Earthships in the million+ dollar range built on the side of mountains that are multiple story. Mostly though, they are for regular people and designed to break free from needing outside services like water, power, sanitation and food.

If course, I meant a real basement, not a walk-in "basement."

If you own property and you are not tied into the power grid, have no telephone, water or sewer do you still have to follow building codes for new construction?
