I listened to a fair amount of the Chick-fil-A discussion this evening. The main problem that the hosts seemed to have with Cathy was that he donated money to groups actively opposing gay marriage. This seems to be a claim that gays are entitled to have their relationships recognized by the state, and I can't see any justification for that claim. I reject the notion that the state is even capable of preventing gays from marrying. Polygamists get married without state recognition all the time. Ever seen the show Sister Wives or the fictional Big Love? Polygamists marry. To say otherwise is to imagine that the state has mystical powers. Presumably the hosts would like government to go away; would they expect marriage to go away? If not they should recognize that marriage exists independent of government, that government cannot prevent marriage any more than it can prevent love, and that state recognition of marriage is not any sort of legitimate right.
