I buy a pack every so often because it enhances certain experiences - ranging from Ayn Rand books to Tarantino movies...
I don't get addicted. At $6+ a pack though... It's not as fun as it used to be.
-
Yep.
-
Camel, Turkish, don't care what flavor, but usually Royal. Cigars every now and then.
-
Premium cigars at fluctuating intervals.
-
One nice cigar a week.
-
I smoke cigs about a pack a day

Same. I go through 2-3 packs a year.
-
I used to be a smoker, and for people smoking at that rate... It sounds like we should be talking to companies that sell humidors...
Nothing is worse to me than a stale Cigarette... yuck.
-
[Cough!]
-
I don't smoke (never so much as put anything containing tobacco to my lips), however my husband smokes occassionally, either Newport cigarettes or (my preference) pipes (especially Cherry Cavindish). I LOVE the smell of pipe tobacco, hate the smell of cigars, and usually don't mind the smell of cigarettes.
-
Ex.
-
I don’t smoke or drink although I probably should have said that in the alcohol thread, but whatever I voted.
-
I don't, I have asthma, so that'd be sort of stupid.
-
I have at least one asthmatic friend who claims that when he smokes IN MODERATION, he needs his inhaler significantly less than when he doesn't smoke at all. And he's done both for extended periods...

Thats bizarre.
-
Why is there no "cocks" option?
-
No tobacco for me.

Never started, watched too many friends smoke their money away.

I smoke a pipe... tobacco pipe, if clarification was needed

It's probably because when he stops smoking his lungs start to clear out, bringing up all of the gunk that's accumulated inside of them. Either that or, more probably, he's in denial. "I have to smoke. It actually helps my condition." You know--they same way every smoker can cite at least one relative who lived to be ninety, despite smoking two packs a day?

not cigarettes..... 8)

Hey...I'm curious...any of you nicotine addicts try vaporizing? Anything to tell the class?
As for me, I don't do nicotine, as I'm not interested in being addicted, and I don't inhale burned stuff.
-
Vaporizers can't be used with tobacco. hehehe
It's really funny to me that people think that vaporizing somehow prevents cancer... Cancer is generally caused by particulates entering the lungs. The fact that the chemicals are carcinogenic speeds up the process, but even wood smoke causes cancer. Radon gas causes cancer... Non-Burned wood DUST causes cancer... Asbestos DUST causes cancer... Leather dust causes cancer...
If you think you are safe while breathing any sort of particulate matter into your lungs, you are deluding yourself. THC vapors are, I'm sure, quite harmful. Maybe not AS harmful as smoke, but in the long run, cancer is cancer. Also, most vaporizers achieve a RATIO of say... 80% THC and 20% Tar... It's simply better than an unfiltered joint... but not 100% tar free.

Here's some supporting info

Essentially... The best you can hope for while breathing in pot, is to slow your onset of lung cancer.
All that said... Nobody lives forever ... Just don't delude yourself.
-
Surprisingly, the unfiltered joint outperformed all devices except the vaporizers, with a ratio of about 1 part cannabinoids to 13 parts tar. This disturbingly poor ratio may be explained by the low potency of the NIDA-supplied marijuana used in the study, which was around 2.3%.
Furthermore, many people vaporize at such a high temperature that they cause combustion, which is where most of the carcinogens are. Dial it down, and you'll do yourself a favor.
Oh...and there's this newer report (http://www.canorml.org/healthfacts/vaporizerstudy2.html) from Cal NORML/MAPS...
Harmful toxins in marijuana smoke can be effectively avoided by a vaporization device, according to a new study by California NORML and MAPS (Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies) with support from a grant from the MPP (Marijuana Policy Project).
...actually, that's not the only study that disagrees with that old marginal study...take your pick:
http://www.google.com/search?rls=en&q=vaporizer+study&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8 (http://www.google.com/search?rls=en&q=vaporizer+study&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8)
Here's the most recent study I found:
Marijuana Vaporizer Provides Same Level Of THC, Fewer Toxins, Study Shows (http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/05/070515151145.htm)
A smokeless cannabis-vaporizing device delivers the same level of active therapeutic chemical and produces the same biological effect as smoking cannabis, but without the harmful toxins, according to University of California San Francisco researchers.
I guess I'm just naive. ;-)
BTW, about the first crack, WRT vaporizing tobacco, I'm guessing you're just as wrong, but it's not something I've verified. I do know that there are vaporizers with instructions for using them with tobacco. The one I vividly recall suggests slicing a cigarette into small cylinders and putting them in the vaporization chamber.
-
Nicotine doesn't vaporize before the temperature at which tobacco burns. I don't know how a marijuana vaporizer would do anything to tobacco, and you didn't address anything I said about putting PARTICULATES into your lungs.
I specifically pointed out (as you repeated in your post) that vaporizers did a better job then unfiltered joints of minimizing the amount of toxins taken into the system. It's not just toxins that cause cancer.
*shrug*
Some people go their entire lives without ever getting lung cancer.
We may be able to cure lung cancer within the next 10 to 20 years...
You can call me wrong all you want if you feel it makes you more comfortable.

As I said, I didn't know, but your citation of an outdated study on the health of vaporizing did not give me confidence.

Apparently you didn't read the references on the newer studies--the carcinogens are virtually eliminated. I'm sure one would have to operate the equipment properly.

Looking at the stars will give you cancer.

I feel a meme coming on.
... but then again, watching memes causes cancer.
-
I just quit two weeks ago.
-
Hey, congrats! No, really. Killed my grandfather and my father.
-
1/2 pack a day maybe. trying to quit, using a pipe with tobacco as a sort of transition. the pipe is pretty cool.
-
Yeah, smoking killed my mom--cancer--and probably helped put Dad into an early grave due to his heart attack. I was up to two packs a day when I quit about thirty years ago. Can you imagine the money I've saved?
-
Camel, Turkish, don't care what flavor, but usually Royal. Cigars every now and then.
Im with you, golds though.
and cigars
-
My dad died of lung cancer that spread. He was smoking 4 packs a day eventually. He was kinda old tho.
-
I smoke a pipe (tobacco) maybe 1-2 times per month.
-
I used to smoke the occassional cigar, but.................I recently had a cuban. I dont ever want to smoke again. I ran out of my supply and they were so good they completely ruined the experience of smoking for me. Nothing will ever be that good again.
-
Need to add a choice to the poll "Chain smoked for decades, now only using Vaporsmith e-cigs because FTL turned me on to them."
-
damn, you go deep...

I didn't chain smoke, but the rest of that applies to me 100%.

I like to smoke when I drink........and when I smoke.............other things............................
-
So trying to quit the bad habit, but keep falling off the wagon! :(
-
I smoke atleast one lovely cigar a day. 8)

Apparently there is no correlation between smoking marijuana and lung cancer. It looks like THC does not cause cancer but helps prevent it.
-
As of a few months ago, Tommy Chong was getting marijuana enemas for his ass cancer.
Theres no joke here, and I donno if it worked.
But it takes a lot of balls on his part to try an alternative therapy, and I applaud him for it.

Apparently there is no correlation between smoking marijuana and lung cancer. It looks like THC does not cause cancer but helps prevent it.
Something in marijuana might reduce cancer risk. I've seen studies that seem to show a dis-correlation. It shouldn't be assumed to be the THC. That would be as over-simplified as associating lung cancer with nicotine when there are so many other harmful chemicals in the tobacco that most people smoke.
Meanwhile, there's even more evidence that marijuana smoke is (at least) not particularly tied to causing lung cancer. This makes me wonder if lung cancer is more about the tar. As I understand it, the substances in pot smoke are water soluble unlike the tar from cigarettes so they don't stay gunked up inside your lungs, or something like that.
-
Surprisingly, fewer than 10 percent of lifelong smokers will get lung cancer. Fewer yet will contract the long list of other cancers, such as throat or mouth cancers. In the game of risk, you're more likely to have a condom break than to get cancer from smoking.
That the majority of smokers beat cancer doesn't make for effective anti-smoking campaigning. So the statistics are turned around: Smoking accounts for 30 percent of all cancer deaths and 87 percent of lung cancer deaths; the risk of developing lung cancer is about 23 times higher in male smokers compared to non-smokers
When you add in the fact that smokers have 75% lower incidence of Altzheimers, that means that after a half-century of a pack-a-day I will probably die a few years earlier than you non-smokers, while you spend your last 10 years drooling into a bib wondering who you are. :)

I apologize for not linking to them in my original post, I will search and return some links if you'd like. The reason I mentioned THC is because the studies done after that Kaiser one point directly at THC for inhibiting tumor growth.

What type of smoking is the poll about?
